So .. We are just under 6 weeks away from Christmas now, around the time where people start training that little bit less and the excuses start surfacing! You know who you are!!
It’s too easy to make excuses and let your training slip over the Festive period.. Parties to attend; gifts to buy; gifts to wrap; cards to write etc etc … Your usual 60-90 minute workout is usually pushed to the bottom of your priorities.
But there is a very simple answer to this! WHAT I hear you say…
Simple! .. Shorten your workout to 45 minutes or even less! Few people realise that you don’t need to be training for hours on end to achieve results. If anything, many people over-train, thus their workouts aren’t as effective as they should be. Overtraining can cause an excess production of Cortisol, a hormone which eats muscle tissue and leads to storage of body fat. You don’t need a full hour to train, it really is that simple!
Chose total body exercises. E.g. The Clean and Press. Warm up, and do a heavy set of 6-8 reps. After your top end set, strip about 20% of weight off the bar and do 3-5 more sets of 8-10 reps (2 minute rest in-between sets), which will come to 10 or fewer sets and it will be a good intense workout. If you are unsure of total body exercises, all it takes is a quick Google search, or even ask Gym staff, that’s what they are there for!
In a nut-shell, all you need is three 15-20 minute training sessions like that a week, but maximum effort must be used to achieve results. Do something different each time, shock your body, that is how you get results, and use a watch to time your rest periods as this is equally as important in achieving results.
Interval or short burst circuit style sessions means you get a lot accomplished in a short space of time, and that is all it takes to get good fat burning stimulus and powerful muscle building.
Lets all be honest, we are all going to eat a liiiitle bit more than we usually eat at Christmas time, albeit one day of the year, our eating, drinking and celebrating seems to go much, much over one day !! As well as a New Year celebration as well. So there is a good few weeks there of indulgence. But if you keep on top of your training, make NO excuses in avoiding training, because all it takes is educating yourself of what exercises to do, and allow 15-20 minutes out of your day, which I believe is definitely possible.
Short workouts can help combat poor eating habits and stress, which Christmas has a good chance of inflicting upon us! Don’t let the birth of baby Jesus get in the way of your Fitness!! Because when you look at it like that .. it just seems daft that you ever let it !! : )
Take your training to the next level.
Lots of love
