Well with Summer almost over .. some would say over .. It’s time to get back to the Vitamin D. Those of us who unfortunately don’t get blessed with much Sunshine between the months of September – May, should be reaping the benefits of Vitamin D, in a nutshell here’s why:
Vitamin D is a steroid vitamin, a group of fat-soluable prohormones, which encourages the absorption and metabolism of calcium and phosphorous. People who are exposed to a lot of sunlight don’t need vitamin D supplements because the sunlight gives them enough Vitamin D synthesis in the skin.
Vitamin D benefits are experienced by the people who maintain Vitamin D body stores and blood levels. Benefits include longer life (reduction in death from all causes), fewer diseases, stronger bones and muscles, fewer infections, less depression, pain and inflammation, more enjoyment of life. Vitamin D has been referred to before as ‘Sunshine in a bottle’. 🙂
Vitamin D helps the immune system fight infections. So you’ll experience fewer colds, flues etc. Not only does Vitamin D enhance your immunity, but it inhibits the development of diseases such as diabetes, arthritis, lupus and multiple sclerosis. It’s also a big inhibitor of cancer.
Vitamin D is a powerful anti-inflamitory agent, which can help with muscular pain.
Diabetes is usually associated with very low levels of vitamin D. So it’s evident that Vitamin D helps regulate blood sugar levels, and also helps reduce blood pressure in hypertensive people.
For most people, 10 or 15 minutes in noontime summer sun is enough, which leads to the production of 10,000 IU (international Units) of Vitamin D. There are a lot of different doses sold in bottles, if you’re thinking of buying and not sure on which does, I would pop into a health shop and ask their advice.
So time to get the bottled Sunshine back out of the cupboard until next Summer now then! Vitamin D me up baby!
Catch you all in the week, have a great day!
