Hello and welcome to my blog!
This is my very first entry so thought I would use it to explain a little bit about myself, where I currently stand in terms of competing and outline the different areas and issues I am hoping to cover within the blog.
I compete in the UKBFF Bodyfitness category and was absolutely overjoyed to be placed 4th at last year’s British Championships in Harrogate (2013). I have only been competing for 2 years and somehow have managed to make the championships both times! I absolutely love the stage, competition prep and everything that comes with it – as many of you probably know- it can get very tough at times but that is the challenge that’s laid out and the one which we set out to accomplish to the best of our capability. I am lucky to have a great support network- namely my coach Eddie Abbew, my sponsors Genetic Supplements who keep me stocked up with the latest supplements, as well as my friends and family. I also own a gym in Loughborough so my day-to-day job is to keep it running smoothly, help others with training, create personalised diet plans, and generally keep improving and expanding the business.
My next show will be the IFBB Summer Invitational, organised by Panthers gym, on 19th July so that officially makes me 12 weeks out…eeeek! I will be prepping with Eddie’s support the whole way and hope that everything goes to plan ready for the big day. I know where I need to make the changes from last time so now it’s just a case of taking it week by week and keeping everything on track. I began contest prep officially 2 weeks ago and so far feel absolutely fine- still plenty of food and only a little cardio so no big changes yet. My body is generally slow to respond so I’m not expecting too much in the next 2 weeks either but I know it will come together quite suddenly. When I start to feel more tired and hungry, I’ll know that my physique is changing for the better so this will spur me on to keep going through those last few weeks.
I will be posting regular updates on how the prep is going and I also want to cover theories, issues, concerns that I encounter along the way – things which other competitors or aspiring competitors can relate to and hopefully find guidance and help.
The most controversial and popular discussions I read about across social media (and therefore the ones I hope to cover) include:
• Muscular hypertrophy and how best to achieve it.
• So-called ‘Clean Eating’- what is it really and has it lost its meaning?
• The importance of carbohydrates (including fructose) and their place in the diet
• The big cardio debate: HIIT vs LISS- which is better for fat loss?
• Supplementation- how to implement it to gain optimal results.
• ‘Cheat’ meals and how to avoid binging
• The stage aftermath and how to come out of contest prep in a healthy way
• The best low sugar, high protein recipes
